About This Product Development Field Guide

Published by Cydney Mar. Last updated November 2026.

This field guide is published by Cydney Mar, a product development strategist who helps founders turn product ideas into real, scalable businesses.

It exists to answer the questions founders ask before they spend money on development: what a tech pack is, how a product development strategy works, what belongs on a launch checklist, and how to choose the right kind of help. It is one of a small number of websites Cydney Mar publishes. Her main website is cydneymar.com.

Who publishes this site?

Cydney Mar publishes and writes this site. It is not independent: Cydney offers product development consulting, and where this guide compares types of support, her own service is one of them. Those pages say so near the top and explain how options were ordered.

About Cydney Mar

Cydney Mar cites 45+ years designing and building product and $300M+ in global retail, TV and direct-to-consumer sales. She was an award-winning designer in New York in the late 1970s, began her first company in 1980 with a couture collection, designed Cirque du Soleil's first Boutique Collection, and led design for Edwin Jeans in North America. For 15+ years she sold her own collections on QVC in 8 countries, with more than 800 hours of live television.

She studied at Blanche Macdonald in Vancouver, her hometown. Beyond fashion she has created jewelry, bath bombs, scented candles, homewares, paper products, car accessories and her vitamin brand, Cydney Mar Wellness. She is Nlaka'pamux and, based in Montreal, runs Cydney Mar Consulting, an Indigenous-owned product development firm. She has also served as an expert advisor to Startup Canada and the EDC.

Today she focuses on founders of consumer products for retail, TV and direct-to-consumer brands, working through her six-stage Concept-to-Reality Pathway: Product Clarity, Right Prototypes, The Right Suppliers, Cost and Margins, Production-Ready, and Launch and Scale.

How to use this guide

Start with what is a tech pack, then follow the chapters across the top of each page. The product development FAQ collects every question in one place, and the methodology explains how answers and comparisons are written.
